GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SKIN CARE DURING RADIOTHERAPY
It is best to keep the skin clean and dry during radiotherapy. Any sticky substances left on the skin may increase the dose and reaction of the skin, and therefore we ask you to use mild lotions that are easy to wash off. Patients find that applying aloe vera two to three times a day can be soothing, and we may give you samples of other creams to try. If your skin is red and tender, avoid clothes that irritate or rub. If you have skin peeling during treatment, we often prescribe Domeboro soaks, which are an aspirin-like powder that is dissolved in water, soaked into gauze or a washcloth, and applied to the affected area a few times a day. This can aid in skin healing. We ask you to avoid deodorants and anti-perspirants containing aluminum or any other metal during treatment.
Please notify your radiation oncologist or therapist if:
- You develop a fever or signs of infection in your breast.
- You have unexpected pain.
- You develop worsening redness, swelling or changes in the skin of the breast.
