PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY SERVICES: SUPPORT FOR MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
A diagnosis of breast cancer presents patients with many emotional challenges. As part of our overall care and to assist patients in processing their emotional responses, the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center has both a clinical psychologist, Dianne Shumay, PhD, and a psychiatrist, Laura Dunn, MD, available to meet with individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This appointment is generally covered by insurance. During this visit, patients have an opportunity to discuss their feelings, learn about ways to cope with the emotional impact that a cancer diagnosis can have, become familiar with the many support services that are available to them and their family members, and ask questions about specific emotional concerns that they may be having. Patients may request this appointment at any time during their treatment.
