A letter from Laura Esserman, MD, Director of the Breast Care Center

Dear Friend of the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center:

Everyday I strive to give my patients the best care available. To me, that means giving them the information they want in a way that makes sense to them; finding treatments that are effective and yet have little toxicity; and organizing care so that they have the fewest invasive procedures, and the least amount of hassle and emotional havoc. These are challenges requiring a complicated synthesis of clinical science, creative problem solving and supportive outreach. Many of you have asked me how to help support the work being carried out at the UCSF Carol Franc Buck Breast Center. Support is most critical for the development of the following three categories: Investigator initiated trials. Many research projects, including new imaging studies, novel therapeutics, studies of herbal therapies, and personal support and life style interventions, are in active development that should lead to the launching of clinical initiatives in the clinic this year. Information management and systems development. In order to provide our patients with timely and helpful testing, risk, and treatment information on their specific cases, we must gather data in effective and efficient ways. We are creating systems to allow us a greater breadth of information for our patients and staff.

Comprehensive services environment. Our goal is to consider the unique needs of the individual patient by offering comprehensive, non-medical services that managed care does not. Some of these services include risk management, decision-making skills, nutritional guidance, educational materials and psychological counseling.

We welcome your support! You can make a donation to the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center from your computer by clicking on the UCSF Online Giving Form.
