Breast Center Explores Lifestyle Intervention in Research Trial

The Breast Care Center of UCSF/Mount Zion is committed to providing personal support and promoting healthy lifestyle choices for women living with breast cancer. They offer a nurturing, collaborative environment where women can express their feelings and discover new tools for meeting the challenges of breast cancer. In collaboration with California Pacific Medical Center, and under the direction of Elisabeth Targ, M.D., clinical director, and Ellen G. Levine, PhD., research director, two investigational programs are being offered to CPMC and UCSF patients who are in their first 18 months since diagnosis with primary breast cancer, or if they are living with recurrent or metastatic breast cancer.

Participants will be randomized to either of two interventions: a Life Issues Support Group or an Integrated Support Program. The Center will be studying the effectiveness of these two groups as well as determining which approach is most effective for which women. Participants in the project will be asked to periodically fill out questionnaires assessing quality of life and coping styles over the course of the first year of their involvement with the trial. Participation in the trial is free.

The Life Issues Support Group:

Women randomized to this intervention will participate in a 12-week support group emphasizing coping with life issues. Topics of the group will include emotional expression, methods of coping, and communication. Participants will be free to express their thoughts and feelings about cancer and related issues. There will be an initial interview with a staff clinician to discuss areas of interest and need. At the close of this 12-week Life Issues Support Group, participants will be able to join an ongoing support group. The group meets for 1-1/2 hours per week.

The Integrated Support Program:

Women randomized to this intervention will meet twice a week for 12 weeks. Program elements will include a support group exploring meaning, purpose, and connectedness; a health education program offering information regarding nutrition, exercise, and coping; and a stress management program incorporating yoga, meditation practices, guided imagery, dance and movement therapy. Participants in this intervention will have an initial interview with a staff clinician, followed by periodic meetings with a social worker to discuss ongoing needs and concerns. In addition, participants in the Integrated Support Program may receive up to 6 individual, couples, or family counseling by referral. At the Close of the 12-week program, participants will be able to join an ongoing support group. This group will meet for 2-1/2 hours per session.

The program aims to create a relaxed atmosphere, and includes a breast cancer library, cozy living room, and an art room open to all participants. For further information, please call (415)885-SUPP (or 7877).
