Dr. Shelley Hwang is a surgeon and associate professor of surgery at the Breast Care Center. She is particularly interested in the early detection of breast cancer, especially of ductal carcinoma in situ. She has expertise in total in skin-sparing mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy, and introduced these less invasive procedures to Singapore General Hospital, where she practiced before coming to the Breast Care Center. Dr. Hwang is committed to providing the highest quality care to patients at every stage of breast disease, from diagnosis to treatment to follow-up care.
Dr. Hwang received her medical training at UCLA Medical School, and completed her surgical residency at Cornell University's New York Hospital, where she first developed her interest in treating breast disease. Her growing interest led her to pursue a fellowship in breast oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
Dr. Hwang has received several honors and awards including the Susan G. Komen Local Hero Award. Her research interests include identifying a less invasive treatment for early stage breast cancers, and finding genetic determinants of cancer progression for in situ cancers. Her research has been supported by the NIH, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and The American Cancer Society. She serves on the board of the Breast Cancer Research Program, and is actively involved in the a community research initiative exploring the risk factors for breast cancer in Marin County.
In her free time, Dr. Hwang enjoys spending time with her family, hiking in the mountains of Northern California, and traveling.
